The house at Cactus Hill

Cactus Hill. We moved into the house in September 1985, just after its shell was completed, with open studs. Over the next three years, we lived in our own construction zone, moving beds from one room to the next and shuffling stacks of building materials while various stages were completed. It's simple, it's all ours, it's all us, and we love it!

In 1998, Cactus Hill underwent its first major transformation. First, Ed built our new outbuilding, on the right. We call it the barn, the shop, the carriage house (because it's tall and narrow), or "out yonder." It has two big workbenches on the main floor, and space originally intended for the riding mower. Upstairs are two big storage lofts, with a skylight. In front of "out yonder" is Ed's vegetable and herb garden, seen here in its first year. Since then we've thinned out some trees so we can get enough sun for tomatoes and peppers. Too bad—it was nice and cool in the shade! Then we painted the house and the barn this gorgeous blue with beige trim.
