Ever since Annie's death, we've sought for a way to make something good come from this tragedy. A good friend has pointed us to the Austin Center for Battered Women. Like all women's shelters, this one always needs money, food, clothing, and volunteer help.
We're happy to report that the Austin Center for Battered Women has received a number of donations in Annie's memory, led by a substantial contribution from the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT). The Center has also received donations in other forms. A recently constructed laundry room addition received a new roof—shingles courtesy of ABC Roofing Supply in Austin, and installation thanks to D.R. Kidd Company, Ed's former employer.
To all who have contributed, we send our warmest gratitude.
Ed plans to continue working with the Center for Battered Women and particularly hopes to be able to speak to teenagers—about communication and trust between young people and their parents, about how situations can escalate and how we can control them, about how hard it is for a 20-year-old to admit she’s made a mistake and needs help. Maybe Ed can trigger some new thinking and help mend, or even forestall, another tragedy.
