Message from a HOBY friend

On July 27, 1999, we received this message at Cactus Hill:

This note is long overdue, and for that I apologize.

But, as I went through my files tonight, I came across a paper I had filed over 5 years ago.  I thought you would like to read what was on the HOBY letterhead:

Re: Andrea Born

Dear Dr. Cotton,

Andrea Born's involvement with the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation (HOBY) began in 1992, when she was selected as the outstanding sophomore from her high school to attend our Leadership Seminar.  Her communication skills and contagious enthusiasm led to an invitation to return as part of our "junior staff."  This invitation was repeated both in 1993 and 1994.

Active in the HOBY Alumni Association, Andrea has demonstrated outstanding leadership by her election to the offices of secretary and then vice-president.  She has been instrumental in rebuilding the Alumni Association since its re-founding a year ago.  Due to the hard work and dedication of Andrea and her fellow officers, the Association is now at its all-time largest.

Andrea's maturity and sensitivity is well beyond her years.  She has twice now served on the counseling staff for the Youth Leadership Forum for Disabled Persons.  This conference, though very similar to our own, is aimed directly at teenagers with disabilities and is run under the guidance of the Office of the Governor of California.  Also, as a member of the Kiwanis International-sponsored Key Club, Andrea is chairperson for the California Special Olympics.

Through my involvement with HOBY and my 8 years of military service, I have interacted with many leaders.  Without reservation, I can state that Andrea is one of the finest individuals with whom I have had the pleasure of working.  I fully expect to hear about her in the years to come.  With her abilities, enthusiasm, and dedication, she cannot help but to succeed.

I fully recommend Andrea Born for Special Admission to CSU Fresno, and cannot think of a finer addition to your University Community.
