Odalisque: A female slave or concubine in a harem. Joan, a
young Englishwoman, posed for this striking nude, which is fully five feet long and graces
a bedroom wall at Cactus Hill. Robert Long often worked with a live model, usually making
one painting and many sketches. From these sketches would later come other paintings, such
as "Making the Bed," which you saw at the beginning of this tour.
