Silla de la suegra. That's the Spanish name for this spectacular flowering cactus. The English translation is "mother-in-law's chair," not a very flattering name for such a beauty. Each flower is open for one day, and each cactus blooms only once a year. This variety usually grows 4 to 8 inches tall. 

Thanks to a friendly cactus lover from Belgium, we've learned that this is one of the Echinocereus family of cactus.
