June 23: Our return trip to Central City, Colorado, last visited in
2002. This tiny mountain town grew in 1859 around an important gold
strike, drawing 10,000 prospectors to "the richest square mile on
earth." But booms do go bust, and today Central City has only a few
hundred permanent residents. The town struggled to survive until the
early 1990s, when casino gambling moved in to Central City and
neighboring Blackhawk, and the second gold rush began. Today this
downtown street looks much as it always did, but from almost every
storefront rings the constant clanging of slot machines.
