Yellowstone National Park:
Old Faithful Inn
Most visitors to Old Faithful make a
stop at the Old Faithful Inn, whether they're staying there or not. This
is among the largest log hotels in the world. Built in 1903, the Inn
featured all the amenities
expected by wealthy travelers of the day (e.g., indoor plumbing and
steam heat). Both primitive and magnificent, it was the first hotel to
project a Western sensibility of grandeur.

When
we walked into the lobby, our
jaws dropped at the awesome scale of this historic building. Soaring to
76 feet, the room is framed in a manmade forest of timbers. Square and
diamond windowpanes filter light through the branches, just as sunlight
changes in a true forest. A massive chimney, with eight separate
fireplaces, dominates the scene.
