National Park: Balanced Rock

From
a distance we can spot it.
There, second from the left,
is Balanced Rock, a 55-foot boulder perched atop a slim column.
At
Balanced Rock, the caprock of the hard Slick Rock Member is perched upon
a base of the Dewey Bridge Member, a mudstone. This softer pedestal
weathers more quickly than the resistant Slick Rock above. Eventually,
the faster eroding Dewey Bridge will cause the collapse of Balanced
Rock.
